Cinematic Barn Wedding Video
Hendall Manor Barns sits in the East Sussex countryside near Uckfield, and it's the kind of venue that doesn't announce itself — you arrive down a quiet lane, step into a 17th-century sandstone courtyard, and the place does the rest. We film across West Sussex and into the surrounding counties, and Hendall is one of those venues we're always glad to return to. The Stone Barn alone is one of the most visually distinctive ceremony spaces in the region.
The venue is entirely privately hired, which means from the moment you arrive it belongs entirely to your wedding. That quality — of a day that genuinely feels like yours — is something that comes through clearly on film.
The Spaces — Built for Film
The Stone Barn
Almost 100 feet long and dating from around 1600, the Stone Barn is the heart of every Hendall wedding. Its split-level layout — connected by steps and a ramp — gives the space genuine architectural drama: there's a natural visual depth to the room that makes ceremony footage feel like it has real scale. Rough stone walls, large windows letting in natural light, and sophisticated ambient lighting in the evening mean the barn reads beautifully at every point in the day. The same space transitions from ceremony to wedding breakfast to dance floor, and the character carries through all of it.
The Courtyard and Terrace
The enclosed central courtyard is one of the most versatile spaces on the venue. A raised terrace with outdoor tables and parasols overlooks a large private lawn, with olive trees, lavender planters, and box hedges adding genuine texture to the frame. This is where drinks receptions breathe — guests spread out, conversations happen, and we move through it all quietly, collecting the moments that make up the middle of a wedding day.
The Grounds
Beyond the courtyard, Hendall offers a pond, a wooden swing, an orchard, open fields, and a network of footpaths through the surrounding countryside. These spaces give us real options for couple portraits at different points in the day — the orchard in particular has a quietness to it that produces some of our favourite footage. At certain times of year there are hay bales in the field beyond, which is exactly the kind of detail we always look for.
How we film at Hendall
The Stone Barn's split-level layout gives us natural camera positions that don't require us to move during the ceremony — we can hold wide angles from the upper level while staying close to the couple at the altar. We plan our positions in advance based on where the light falls at your ceremony time, and we move through the day in step with its rhythm rather than against it.
We work carefully in advance to understand the flow of the day: when the light hits the courtyard, which part of the grounds will look best for golden hour portraits, and where we want to be during the transition from dining to dancing. The result is footage that feels considered, not reactive.
Frequently Asked Questions — Filming at Hendall Manor Barns
Can you capture the full scale of the Stone Barn during the ceremony?
Yes — the split-level layout actually works in our favour. We can position one camera at a higher vantage point to hold the full length and depth of the barn, while staying close enough to the ceremony for the quiet, intimate moments. It's one of the more cinematically interesting ceremony spaces we film in.
How do you handle the transition from ceremony to reception in the same space?
We keep filming throughout. The flip from ceremony layout to wedding breakfast is one of those unscripted, informal stretches of a wedding day that often produces excellent footage — guests relaxed, the couple breathing for the first time, the venue transforming around them. We don't stop when the ceremony ends.
What's the best spot for couple portraits at Hendall?
We have several options depending on the time of year and the light. The pond and orchard are consistently beautiful; the arched rear exterior of the barn is a strong architectural backdrop; and the fields beyond the grounds give you a sense of the East Sussex countryside that you don't get in the courtyard. We'll recommend spots in advance and leave room to follow the light on the day.
Do you film in the evening once the dancing starts?
Yes, always. The Stone Barn's lighting in the evening has real warmth to it and the footage from the first dance and early dancing is something couples consistently come back to. Our cameras handle low light well, so the quality doesn't dip as the evening goes on.
Is Hendall within your normal filming area?
Yes — we're based in Chichester and film regularly across East Sussex as well as West Sussex. Hendall is well within our range, and we don't charge additional travel fees for venues in this area.
How far in advance should we book?
Hendall has a loyal following and tends to book up well ahead of schedule. We'd recommend securing your videographer 10–12 months before your wedding date, particularly for weekend dates in the summer.
