Wedding videography at The Rubbing House, Goodwood — a privately-owned South Downs estate with marquee capacity for 250 guests, Isle of Wight views, and no neighbours. West Sussex Wedding Videos.

Cinematic Wedding on the South Downs

The Rubbing House is a privately-owned estate on the edge of the Goodwood grounds, overlooking the South Downs with views that reach as far as the Isle of Wight on a clear day. It isn't a purpose-built wedding venue — it's a family home that opens for weddings and events — and that distinction matters. There's a quality to days here that purpose-built venues struggle to replicate: it feels genuinely personal, genuinely private, and completely yours.

Up to 250 guests can be accommodated in a marquee in the grounds, and with accommodation for up to 16 people on site across a two-night package, the whole wedding party can arrive, prepare, celebrate, and wake up the next morning without going anywhere. There are no neighbours to consider, no noise restrictions to work around, and nothing competing for your attention.

The Setting — Built for Film

The estate's position on the South Downs escarpment gives it a visual quality that's hard to overstate. The landscape opens up in every direction — downland, sky, and on clear days the coast — and a marquee set into those grounds doesn't just provide a reception space, it frames the whole wedding in something genuinely cinematic.

The house itself provides a natural anchor for the preparation part of the day. With accommodation for the wedding party on site, there's no rushed morning arrival — getting-ready footage here has a relaxed, unhurried quality that comes directly from everyone being in the same place from the night before.

The grounds, meanwhile, give us enormous flexibility for couple portraits. The South Downs light at this elevation in the late afternoon is exceptional, and with no neighbouring properties in frame, every shot has the landscape to itself.

How we film at The Rubbing House

Marquee weddings have a different rhythm to barn or manor house weddings, and we plan for that. The absence of fixed walls and windows means we control more of the visual approach — we're working with the marquee's interior light, the natural light spilling in from the grounds, and the landscape framing from the entrance. We identify the best positions for ceremony and reception footage during planning, and we map out the golden hour portrait window based on your specific timing and time of year.

With two videographers on the day, we can cover preparation in the house with the bride and simultaneously wherever the groom is staying - so the film builds properly from the first moments of the morning rather than beginning at the ceremony.

Frequently Asked Questions — Filming at The Rubbing House

Is The Rubbing House a dedicated wedding venue?

It's a privately-owned estate that welcomes weddings and events — which is part of what makes it special. The experience is closer to having a private estate for the weekend than booking a conventional venue, and that comes through clearly in the footage. Days here feel personal in a way that's immediately visible on film.

How does filming work in a marquee?

Marquees offer real creative flexibility. Without fixed architecture to work around, we adapt our positions to the light and layout of your specific setup. We plan with the marquee supplier's floor plan in advance, identify the best ceremony angles, and work with whatever natural and ambient light the marquee lets in. Modern cinema cameras handle marquee lighting conditions very well.

Can you capture the South Downs views as part of the film?

Yes — and we'd make a point of it. The elevated position of The Rubbing House is one of its defining qualities, and footage of the grounds, the landscape, and the horizon forms a natural part of how we establish the setting in your film. Drone footage here is particularly striking.

What's the best time of year to film at The Rubbing House?

The estate looks beautiful in every season, but summer and early autumn make the most of the South Downs views and the outdoor marquee setting. Late afternoon light in July and August over the Downs is exceptional — we'd always plan for a portrait window during that time.

Do you include drone footage at marquee venues?

Yes, subject to weather and airspace permissions. The Rubbing House's position and the open landscape around it make it one of the more rewarding venues for aerial footage — from above, the scale of the setting and the marquee in the grounds tells a story that ground-level cameras alone can't.

How far in advance should we book?

The Rubbing House takes a limited number of weddings per year given its private nature. Dates can book up well in advance, particularly summer weekends. We'd recommend securing your videographer as soon as your date is confirmed.
