Cinematic Films in the South Downs
Upwaltham Barns sits in one of those places that makes you remember why you moved to (or stayed in) West Sussex. Nestled amongst the rolling hills of the South Downs National Park, this family-run venue has been hosting weddings since 2001 — which means the team there knows exactly how to make a wedding day unfold seamlessly, and it shows in the calmness of every couple we film there.
We're a Chichester-based team working across West Sussex, and Upwaltham is one of those venues we genuinely look forward to returning to. The light in that wildflower meadow at golden hour is consistently exceptional. The way the East Barn's floor-to-ceiling windows frame the downs is something you cannot replicate anywhere else. The courtyard feels intimate even with 150 guests. These are the kinds of details that separate a good wedding film from a genuinely moving one.
The Spaces — Built for Film
Upwaltham's layout is beautifully suited to wedding videography. The East Barn, with its floor-to-ceiling windows looking out toward the South Downs and the courtyard, is one of those ceremony spaces that does half the work for you — the light, the backdrop, the sense of occasion are all already there. We just need to capture it.
The South Barn for the reception has the warmth of authentic wooden beams, wrought-iron candelabras, and ambient lighting that makes evening footage glow with atmosphere. The central courtyard, with its floral-filled flowerbeds and exclusive-use setup, means your guests have space to move, to celebrate, to be themselves — and means we have the space to capture those moments from multiple angles.
But the real magic is the wildflower meadow and the golden hour. If you're getting married at Upwaltham and it's a summer wedding, that window of light in the late afternoon is unmissable. We always factor in time for couple portraits there — and without fail, it produces some of the most beautiful footage of the entire day.
Two Barns, One Seamless Film
Having two videographers at Upwaltham means the different spaces of the venue are covered simultaneously from the very start of the day. While one of us is with the bride during preparation and in position for the first look, the other is already at the East Barn — filming the details, the arriving guests, the atmosphere building ahead of the ceremony. Nothing from those early moments is left to chance.
We plan carefully in advance so we know the exact flow of the day, where key moments will happen, and where the light will be strongest at each point. That preparation is what separates a film that documents your day from a film that tells your story.
Your finished film includes a 7–9 minute highlights film with licensed music, a complete ceremony film, full speeches, first dance filmed in full with smooth movement, and a 1-minute social reel. Drone footage over the South Downs and the venue grounds is included subject to weather and venue permissions — and from the air, Upwaltham's setting is genuinely stunning.
Frequently Asked Questions — Filming at Upwaltham Barns
Are you familiar with Upwaltham Barns?
Yes — we've filmed at Upwaltham on a number of occasions and know the venue well: the light in both barns, the flow of the courtyard, and the golden hour in the wildflower meadow.
Can you capture good footage in both the East and South Barns?
Yes. The East Barn's brightness and the South Barn's warmth require slightly different camera approaches, but our Sony Cinema Line cameras handle both beautifully. You'll see no dip in quality between ceremony and reception footage — everything looks intentional and cinematic.
How much time should we allow for couple portraits in the meadow?
If weather and daylight allow, we'd always recommend 20–30 minutes in the wildflower meadow at golden hour. It's one of the most beautiful settings we film in all year, and the footage from there is consistently what couples return to again and again.
Can you film drone footage at Upwaltham?
We hold the necessary CAA permissions and will confirm drone access with the venue in advance. The aerial views of the South Downs, the barns, and the surrounding countryside are exceptional.
What package do most Upwaltham couples choose?
Most choose our Platinum Package at £1,800 — two videographers, full day coverage, highlights film, ceremony, speeches, first dance, drone footage, and social reel. For couples wanting a deeper, more narrative film of their whole day, our Diamond upgrade extends the highlights to 14–18 minutes.
How early should we book?
Upwaltham is a family-run venue with a loyal following and books up well in advance. We'd recommend securing your videography team 9–12 months before your wedding date to avoid disappointment.
